Ryan

Hello

My name is Ryan and I am artist from Swansea with Autism, and I specialize in creating portraits with graphite pencils.

My Story

Hello, my name is Ryan Jones, and I specialize in reproducing photos and portraits with graphite pencil's to create beautiful and unique pieces of art. I’m based in Swansea and although my artistic skills are self-taught.

As mentioned at the top of the page I have Autism and was diagnosed at an early age, and throughout my diagnoses I struggled with speech and language and was classed as non-verbal. By drawing everyday images my speech and language started to improve and over time I decided that producing personal portraits would become my passion throughout my life.

Away from my love of drawing, my other passions in life are my hobbies, I like talking long country walks (I find this helps me think better), swimming helps me to relax as I also suffer from anxiety and I love watching a good movie in the cinema with my family as I feel it helps me to feel more secure.

I have been praised on my unique style due to the way I hold my pencils and start the sketching from the eyes of the portrait, not the outline which you can see by viewing my video reels on my Instagram or TikTok accounts. But to me it's just the norm since I was a young child and I need to be able to draw and write in my preferred way. I often have stalls at craft fairs and pop-up shops, so keep an eye out for any upcoming events on my social media pages or on my Blog page.

I left college with levels 1,2 and 3 diploma with distinction in art and design. Whilst studying at college I was entered into Eisteddfod Yr Urdd in Maldwyn 2024 in which I won 1st place in the local heats and national judging and received a gold medal and several certificates.

Whilst studying at college my family and I were invited to the Gower college student awards 2024 where I was presented  with the award of Visual Arts Student of the year 2024. I was also commissioned to produce a personal portrait which was presented during the awards ceremony ( some images of which are available to view on my Blog page.)

Over the 3 years that I have studied art in college, I have had the pleasure to have my solo work displayed at Swansea Arena in 2023 and again in 2024.

I’m passionate about my work and I put a lot of care into each portrait. I hope that my sketches bring joy to the people who view them and that they will be treasured for many years.

What I use

Paper
For most of my portraits Windsor & Newton 250gsm acid free Bristol board drawing paper is used. I choose this particular brand because of the smooth surface which is ideal for detailed work.

Tools
I use several types of brushes and tools to create my portraits and every artist has their own preference. For my portraits I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils for blending, shading and fine line details.

With this combination I believe it is the perfect choice to achieve both clarity and depth in my drawings.

Frame
All commissioned work comes in a frame. For practicality and safety all shipped commissions will have a Perspex pane.
